Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I have dreamed about this lens for so long since some of photographers using it. This is my 2nd L-lens after Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, and my 6th lens since I started the hobby. The best thing from this lens is the focal length. 24-105mm is the most useful range. In cropped-sensor camera, 24mm is for semi-wide, 35mm for normal, 50-85 for portrait, 100-105 for telephoto. So it is one of the best walk-around lens for Canon body. It is quite heavy and big, but it looks great on my 40D.

What I like:
* Very useful Focal Length. Good for walk-around lens on full-frame body as well as cropped body.
* Weather-sealed.
* Optical Image Stabilized.
* Pro look. With red ring. Good build quality
* Image Quality & Sharpness. But it is not as sharp as Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
* Min. focusing distance 0.45 meters to make the Maximum Magnification 0.23x.

What I don't like:
* The maximum aperture is only 4.
* Min. focal length is only 24mm. Would be great if it is 20mm. :)
* The AF is quite fast. But it is not as fast as Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. May be because it is f/4.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6mm IS versus Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II are the cheapest lenses in Canon's line-up today. To compare image quality (sharpness & color rendering) of these lenses, I shot with Canon EOS 40D using RAW and convert the results to JPEG using DPP ver 3.2.1.5. I set my 40D into Manual Mode to make sure that Aperture and Shutter Speed are equal between two lenses.

Comparison 1
I took pictures of my son new toys. The focus point is in the Locomotive.

Comparison 2
To compare the color, I took pictures of 24 pieces of Colored Pencils.

From those pictures, I find that the Image Quality of Canon EF 50mm is better than Canon EF-S 18-55mm. From the first and third comparisons, image from 50mm is a bit sharper. From the second, I like the color from 50mm much more.
